Velvet Moon
Painting Velvet Moon took me back to those hot, sticky summers when my friends and I spent so much time outside, discovering just how much there was to notice. I still get that feeling when I look closely at the world that comes out after dark. That’s what drew me to this cecropia moth.
I painted it life-size, with a seven-inch wingspan on a 9 × 12-inch sheet of Arches 140 lb cold-pressed watercolor paper. I built up more than 50 layers of pigment to give the wings their velvety texture and let a little light come through the darker colors.
